On November 15, 2022, Prof. Dr. Patrick Zschech gave his inaugural lecture on the topic “White-Box-AI: Transparent decision support based on interpretable machine learning models“.  The lecture was part of the lecture series #NUElecture, which was organized in cooperation with NEUES MUSEUM NÜRNBERG. The #NUElectures format offers a citizen-friendly platform for science communication to actively disseminate findings to a broader audience and to take up suggestions from it. WiSo researchers present innovative research results in a tangible, understandable and exciting way at various locations in the city.

In his inaugural lecture, Patrick Zschech provided an overview of current developments in the field of white-box AI. He demonstrated that modern machine learning models do not necessarily have to be opaque black-box models and can still be capable of achieving competitive prediction qualities. This is highly relevant for a wide range of application scenarios where critical decisions have to be made on a daily basis, such as in healthcare, finance or justice.

After the lecture, a lively discussion took place, where various questions and specific points were underpinned with individual experiences, critical reflections, and future perspectives with the full audience.
